Us, you & the environment

Doing our bit
  • Packaging & Environmental Considerations

We take choosing our packaging materials and methods seriously at The Gin Box Shop.

Over the last 6 months you may have noticed that our packaging has got simpler, but in a good way, we have been phasing out the use of plastic wherever we can, and have been developing new ideas to assist you in how you deal with packaging from us.

    Our Main Objectives

    • Minimise non-recyclable materials, including sticky-backed-plastic or sellotape.
    • Keep plastic to a minimum, whilst still offering competitive options for our customers.
    • Keep protective packaging material to a minimum whilst ensuring parcels aren’t damaged in transit.
    • When possible, buy products which are themselves made from recycled materials.
    • Inform customers what they can do with each element of packaging they inherit from us.

You can read the extensive list of packaging materials, along with what they are used for and what their recycling or re-use options are on our recycling page.

  • Gardeners Respite

We created our own recipe centric around the marvellously fresh Principe de los apostles.

Its' Mojito-esque flavour suits the eucalyptus in the Principe perfectly. And the light addition of caraway helps bring this out even more.

  • Gin & Tonic cake

Here at the Gin Box we’ve been hearing a lot about gin and tonic cake and we’ve tried a couple of examples that were pretty good so we decided to give it a go ourselves. Now there is a minor issue in that we don’t really bake.

We can certainly cook a mean roast dinner and BBQ like a trooper but baking has never really featured highly on the skill set. Cue our good friends at Social Pantry in London. They’ve got lots of experience with gin and tonic and more importantly lots and lots of experience with excellent cake.

  • X-Gin Chocolate Espresso Martini

As the winter nights draw in, you'll be after something wholesome, indulgent and perhaps even spiced to keep your cockles warm.

This gluttonous treat should do just the trick..

Enter X-Gin, with all the qualities you expect from a fine dark cocoa. Bitter on the finish, nutty and few surprises lurking in it's depths.

  • Rhubarb Gimlet

There are multiple variants of this recipe around. We started with Warner Edwards' own and offer up the addition of pink peppercorns and coriander seeds to add a little spice if you like.

Personally, I find Warner Edwards Rhubarb sweet enough, though they recommend adding a little lime cordial to the recipe to sit in the mix.

  • St. Giles Martini

This classic cocktail is pure sophistication. The ideal early evening aperitif.

Its light and just the right combination of soft & bitter.

  • Gin Sour (with Aperol)

You can use any London Dry for this recipe. Jenson's is an excellent choice, or better still our Two Birds Cocktail Gin is designed for purpose, and it comes in a 200ml bottle at just £13!

Egg whites not only bring together flavors; they also give a cocktail a silky texture. The Aperol in the recipe doubles as light sweetener, so forget the syrup and go pro. Aromatic bitters are used as garnish to finish and add aroma.

  • Gower (GŴYR) Prohibition Cocktail

GŴYR aka Gower gin recommend their "Prohibition" cocktail.

As decadent and delicious as the 1920s

It's a naughty twist on a gin fizz, normally a common mix for a gin liqueur.

We substituted the sugar in their recipe for a little honey and recommend the addition of grapefruit peel to garnish and a little soft zest to the finish.

  • Fours Pillars' "Who Shot Tom Collins"

A bloody twist on a tall classic.

Four Pillars is a small Australian distillery creating delicious gin from the Yarra Valley. They publish cocktail recipes regularly and we think this one is just delicious.

Their bloody Shiraz has a burst of raspberries on the nose and its this that hits you immediately, followed by cassia bark gliding through underneath.

  • Anno Distillers (Kent)

    • patience-anno
    • anno-team

We took an excursion to Marden in Kent to the home of Anno gin.

Anno is our closest distillery and a firm favourite here at The Gin Box. Their Kentish gin is made by ex-scientists Andy and Norman (can you see what they've done) and we were lucky enough to be shown around by the other key person at the distillery, Andy's daughter, Kim.

We met the magnificent 'Patience', the 300 litre copper pot still from which this great gin hails, named after their 'arduous' wait for a licence - check out the tall red head above - and her little sister that sparked the idea for Anno gin back in 2011/12.
